Favourite Disney Rides - Indiana Jones

I thought this week I would start to talk about our family favourite rides, as an ongoing topic. The rides discussed will be in no particular order from week to week, however I am starting with my most favourite ride of them all, the Indiana Jones ride.  Our experiences will be shared, and whom in our party thought the ride was great, or not so great! For those yet to travel to Disneyland, the rides documented will be some of the best rides to aim for. If you have been to Disneyland - a trip down memory lane is in store for you. Of course each Disney theme park is slightly different, having different rides, so feel free to agree/disagree in comments.

Ride: Indiana Jones Adventure
Location: Disneyland (Anaheim), DisneySea (Tokyo), EuroDisney.

This is my favourite ride in Disneyland I just love the Indiana Jones movies, the fun and sense of adventure of this ride. It is also husband DH's favourite ride. Our daughter A.J who was aged 7 at the time enjoyed this ride the first time, she thought it was great, but the second time she thought far less of it and refused to ride it any further times (we took up the Disney Child Swap arrangement after that. Further information about this you can read on http://themeparktravelguide.blogspot.com.au/2017/05/how-to-beat-lines-at-disneyland-and.html). A.J didn't enjoy being bounced around all the time and the ride was really noisy. She also struggled to hang on to the bar attached to the seat and probably the ride was a little too rough for her at age seven.

This ride breaks down a lot although only for a few hours at a time. It is not unusual to find cast members out the front of the ride saying that its not currently running. My tip, if you see the ride is operating, and you have limited days at the park – make sure you ride it. If you leave it until the last day of your visit to Disneyland, it might be out of action.  Funnily enough we met some fellow guests at our hotel who rode the ride and shared their story with us which might explain some of the breakdowns. The woman we met told us her handbag accidentally flung out of her lap on this ride and was lost ‘somewhere’ in the ride. This resulted in the ride being stopped until the handbag was found by cast members. Her husband was understandably fuming as they had all their passports and a sizeable amount of cash in the bag and it all went over the side mid ride. It all had a happy ending though and the handbag was found and the ride recommenced. Myself, I nearly lost my sun glasses with the jolting and lurching of this ride in Tokyo – and it’s a good idea to put your sunglasses away in the seat pocket before the ride begins –not trying to do so whilst the ride is already in motion.

This ride changes each time you ride it. It is said that there are over 150 000 different special effects and therefore experiences of this ride.  We managed to ride this 3 times in Anaheim (a five minute wait twice in a row during fireworks– and that was getting to the front of the queue) and we also rode this ride in DisneySea, where we did the Single rider line, which was again only 5 minutes (and that was mostly the journey just to get to the front of the line). Seeing the iconic movie settings and actual movie props was so much fun. In Anaheim, the attraction is called 'Indiana Jones: Temple of the Forbidden Eye’. In Disney Sea  it is called ‘Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull’. The DisneySea ride is surprisingly unrelated to the fourth movie 'Indiana Jones  and the Crystal Skull'. In EuroDisney the ride is called ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril’. The EuroDisney ride is a totally different ride experience from Anaheim and Tokyo, and is more of a roller coaster. Interestingly, the EuroDisney ride opened 2 years before Anaheim's Indiana Jones ride.

The Anaheim ‘Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye’ is set in 1930’s India. The pre-ride line is usually very long, but full of visual things to look at, including skull pathways, dark chambers and temples. The queue starts outside, near the troop transport truck used in the movies. Throughout the line you are told that the Mara will offer you one of three gifts, but only if you do not gaze into the eyes of Mara. Of course, someone in your party will look into the Mara’s eyes…

Two interesting facts that in this pre-ride line, there are various crates. One is marked with the number "990 6753" and refers to the number on the crate holding the Ark of the Covenant in ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ movie. Another crate is marked "Deliver to Club Obi Wan", referring to a fictional club at the beginning of 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of doom' movie and a reference to the ‘Star Wars’ franchise.

At the start of the ride itself you hop into a four-wheel drive jeep (also known as an enhanced motion vehicle)  and set off on an adventure of a lifetime. You are bumped and jolted in this jeep through the ride as you dodge various near catastrophes in a gigantic cavern, including volcanoes and that large spherical ball.....  the Mara also blasts green beams of light triggering fiery explosions.

The ride entrance at DisneySea, Tokyo

Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull is based in DisneySea, Tokyo. This ride however is set in Mexico during the 1930s. Indiana Jones is looking for the Fountain of Youth in an Aztec temple guarded by a Crystal Skull. The outside of the temple resembles a large Aztec pyramid and temple and is quite impressive in the lush surrounds. The actual ride itself is very similar to the Anaheim ride, including the giant ball sequence. Overall, it’s a terrific ride and should not be missed! I am very surprised that Magic Kingdom, Florida does not have this ride.

How do you think the Indiana Jones rides compare?
